Quote For The Day - Serena Apologizes

"I want to amend my press statement of yesterday, and want to make it clear as possible - I want to sincerely apologize FIRST to the lines woman, Kim Clijsters, the USTA, and tennis fans everywhere for my inappropriate outburst. I'm a woman of great pride, faith and integrity, and I admit when I'm wrong.

"I need to make it clear to all young people that I handled myself inappropriately and it's not the way to act -- win or lose, good call or bad call in any sport, in any manner.

"I like to lead by example. We all learn from experiences both good and bad. I will learn and grow from this, and be a better person as a result."

--Serena Williams

There. She said it all. Next.

Much better. No qualifications, no explanations, no excuses. Well done.

Yes, more straight forward and to the point. I think truly the most important part of that is the comment to young people....I always think about that when I hear about ANY sports figure whose conduct is called into question. Young kids need to know that this is not the way to handle yourself. And for those that love and admire Serena, she needed to say that to these young players who emulate her.

hahaha.

otherwise the slamming, and
slamming would have gone on end.

In a sense, it is a mark of her 'qualifications' that so much drama/attention follows her.

That should make strong.

It has been said now. next !

I accept your apology Serena. I would like to move on from this incident as well. Better luck next year. You're the best.

Ok can we move on now????

Yes, MMT. Yes.

Beth, I'm with you on the shout out to the youngsters.

I hope this very well-done apology also puts to an end any notion, however faint, of a ban or suspension. She got her proper punishment during the match.

I just heard Venus bitch slap PMac. Awesome. Just freaking awesome.

I love how the crowd and Venus handled Pat Mac. It's ridiculous how they WANT this to be a big deal, or a bigger deal.

The crowd wasn't having it, and Venus shut it down with a smile:

"What the crowd is saying is that it's time to move on."

Big sister and professional all with 12 words.

Craig Hickman said...

What a brilliant moment that was.

And it had to feel great for Serena to get that support from the crowd as well.

Tennis should institute a challenge rule for foot faults. simple to do, place camera's on the baseline showing the foot and when the ball is struck, you can have split screens, They do it baseball when a running is tagging up on a fly ball to the outfield. one camera shows the catch the second the foot of the runner on the base! This would make sure that this kind of incident will never happen again, especially in a huge match like this one.

If anyone thinks that Venus does not take her role as big sister seriously, they should really put that thought to rest. She really is a graceful person. I see it in the way she conducts herself both on court and off the court. Just smiling and letting the world know that nothing bothers her. A true and awesome champion. I can actually see Serena laying her head down on Venus' shoulders and crying her heart out over this and her big sister just patting her on the head and saying, thats ok, I am right here for you. That is what my big sisters have been doing for me and I just feel that this is what Venus has been doing with Serena all her life. Just being there. You go girl. Awesomeness indeed.

do we get a new thread
for the
finals ?

Veruca Salt said...

oh i missed it? what did venus say?

Beth said...

Since we haven't got a new thread yet, let me just say, this final sucks ass. Sorry, but really.

Dapxin said...

its so pointless.
Delpo is only zig-zag-ing into his true potential.
the monogram is doing just
the minimum he needs to do.
boring!

Michael said...

It's on the cusp of being a decent match. DelPo just isn't moving well. If he loses the 2nd set, it's over.

Christopher Crocker said...

A primary reason that this hasn't been a great match to watch is that Roger Federer seems to have come in with a really good strategy, and is executing it very well. He is keeping the angle away from that big backhand that killed Nadal yesterday, as well as slicing the ball reallll low. Certainly Del Potro is shaken by the stage, who can blame him in his first GS final, but don't think that Federer is simply standing, waiting for him to blow it.

Michael said...

WE HAVE A MATCH!!!! 5-5 in the 2nd.

Dapxin said...

6. 4. And delpo almost blew it

Michael said...

I was having flashbacks to Wimbledon when Andy missed an overhead in the tiebreak of the 2nd set. Delpo did the same thing, with an easier overhead, but held on. Wow, a match!

Michael said...

OK, I see there is an open thread. Thanks Craig!

Craig Hickman said...

Karen, I don't think anyone has ever argued that Venus doesn't take her big sister role seriously.

But that doesn't mean she gives Serena Slam titles.

Just saying.

Dapxin said...

another breakpoint,
a bombastic delPotro winner.
He really does have the
skill to win this game.
I hope he finds the belief.

nykinora said...

Craig, if you frequented tennis boards you'd be surprised at how many Serena-only fans have argued that Venus is a fraud or hides behind her big sister status to justify her losses. You might be surprised at how viciously critical those fans can be on the odd occasions when Venus isn't there for Serena. (i.e. not in the crowd but at home practicing - as if her role is to be Serena's cheerleader.)

I've read those kinds of comments many times.

I'm with Karen.
This is not a knock on Serena (because while I think she was wrong, she's human I think the reaction has been beyond hyperbolic with all kinds of ugly undertones...) Serena's been punished and she's taken responsibility. What more do people want? Blood?

But this is why I love me some Venus and win or lose she's *my* player. She's gentle and dignified and I don't think it's false, anymore than Serena's fire and candour is or Rafa's humility and shyness. And...

Yay Crazy Elf! You did it! My partner's thrilled because he's been *telling* me that Delpo was on the verge of beating Dr. Monogram...and whadd'ye know?

BayouPeach said...

I love how Venus effectively shut down PMac...CLASSIC!

And the fans were great. That was an awesome moment

Her real feelings came out during the press conference. She justified her every action and rubbed salt by suggesting that lines women should expect some abuse as part of their jobs.

This rehearsed apology is a PR stunt because of fear of suspension

She is a great champion and that is the reason we cannot move on quickly. There will be tons of young players who will view her as a role model and justify that this kind of behavior is part of the job.

No, we are not overdoing it. She deserves to be suspended for what she said during the press conference more than for what she did on court

Kisore,
Interesting points.
But you label it PR stunts now,
what's she to do ?

Sit down, duck, and accept the potential of a suspension?

or cry at the feet of the WTA ?

Kishore said...

Dapxin,

I am suggesting that she should serve a suspension (A symbolic one at a minimum).

She has already done all the damage. Good that there is this PR release, not enough when wedont know if any of that is genuine.
